Video for Product Launches: The Startup Playbook

You’re about to launch a product. You’ve got the landing page, the press list, the social strategy. But if you don’t have video as part of your launch toolkit, you’re making it harder than it needs to be.
After producing videos for hundreds of product launches, here’s the playbook that works.
Start Video Production 10-12 Weeks Before Launch
A professional explainer video takes 6-8 weeks to produce. Add 2-4 weeks of buffer for feedback cycles, script pivots, and the inevitable internal debate about messaging. Starting 10-12 weeks out gives you breathing room.
The biggest mistake founders make is treating video as a last-minute add-on. By the time they realize they need it, there’s no time to do it right.
The Four Videos Every Launch Needs
1. The Teaser (15-30 seconds)
A short, punchy video that builds anticipation. No product details – just enough to make people curious. Use it on social media 2-4 weeks before launch.
2. The Explainer (60-90 seconds)
Your core launch video. This is the one that lives on your landing page and explains what the product does, who it’s for, and why it matters. This is the video that does the heavy lifting.
3. The Product Demo (2-3 minutes)
A screencast or walkthrough showing the product in action. This is for people who are already interested and want to see how it actually works. Less polished than the explainer, more detailed.
4. The Founder Story (60-90 seconds)
You on camera explaining why you built this. The backstory. The problem you experienced firsthand. This builds trust and humanizes the brand.
Distribution Strategy
Having the videos is only half the battle. Here’s where to deploy them:
Launch day: Explainer on landing page, teaser on social media, founder story in email to your list. Week 1: Product demo in follow-up emails, explainer in press outreach. Weeks 2-4: Social clips from all four videos, retargeting ads using the teaser and explainer.
Video Supports Press Coverage
Journalists are busy. A 60-second explainer video saves them 15 minutes of reading your press release. Include it in every media pitch. The ones who cover you will often embed the video in their article – that’s free distribution.
Common Launch Video Mistakes
Trying to explain everything in one video. Making it too long. Waiting too late to start production. Not having a distribution plan. Spending all the budget on production and nothing on promotion.
The Launch Window is Short
You get one shot at launch momentum. Video is the most efficient way to capture attention, explain your value, and convert interest into action during that critical window.
