So how can you make sure you aren’t wasting marketing money and effort? How do you avoid being mediocre, and most importantly, how can your video make an impact on people’s lives?

Here is something that they don’t tell you in online marketing school.

People might find your YouTube channel because they want to learn something, but they returned because they are entertained.

While humor is not the only way to capture the hearts of your viewers, it is one tool in your creative toolbox with the power to keep viewers coming back for more.

Here are 11 ways businesses can use (or find a way to use) humor in video advertising.

1. Use funny creatives.

Comedians have mastered the art of making people laugh. If you are having trouble coming up with a humorous concept, procure the services of someone who makes a living finding humor in the everyday and have them give you some insight into your marketing project. You might be surprise at their take on your brand or product.

2. Exaggerate.

Humor is about being able to relate. Take the everyday and make it bigger, messier, bossier, crazier. Think Internet Meems, but for video.

3. Reveal information with a punch line.

Videos are great if they provide valuable information, and make people laugh as well.

4. All things pop.

It’s called “pop” for a reason. Popular culture is well-known and understood by mainstream America. Justin Bieber, Katy Perry or Taylor Swift or a sizzling blockbuster… the power of pop is undeniable, and jokes targeting anything in the pop industry make for good advertising that viewers will be able to relate to.

5. Make impossible a reality.

Making the impossible come to life is a great way of making people laugh. Remember how those guys were able to lift a car right after eating Mentos? Yes, it’s been decades and people still remember that advertisement.

6. Think small.

Like kid small. Children say and do the funniest things. Not only are they funny, they are also memorable.

7. Be witty, plain and simple.

It’s amazing how a little wit can go a long way. Good video advertising can predict what the viewer is expecting, and then surprise them with a different outcome. Catching people off guard can be a great way to get a laugh.

8. Laugh at your own company’s expense.

This one is tricky, but do it right and viewers will feel comfortable with your business; you will gain their trust.

In the end, it’s important to remember that your online video advertisements impact  your viewers on a personal level. Adding a little humor to your marketing campaigns may be just what you need to earn viewers’ appreciation and raving support.
